Topic: what are the main tasks of universities: to offer students knowledge and skills essential for their future career, or to provide students with access to knowledge itself? What do you think university education should contain?

Tertiary education is essential to students’ personal growth and all-round development, which may prepare them for the future career, and therefore, the main tasks of universities are becoming a topic of heated discussion. From my point of view, universities should not only provide the students with easy access to knowledge and necessary guidance, but also cultivate many critical qualities in them.

Undeniably, acquainting the students with the most advanced knowledge and get them academically prepared for the future is a primary goal of universities, no matter whether the students will enter the job market directly or go on graduate study. A solid academic foundation is the prerequisite for any further development. Take an English-major student for example. Only if she has a profound command of the language skills, can she succeed in any English-related jobs, such as teaching, translation, interpretation, etc.

Another critical role universities should play is to cultivate valuable qualities in their students, such as critical thinking, independent-learning ability, team-work mentality etc. It is actually these intangible assets that differentiate the students from one another. The 21^st century is a brand-new epoch which is characterized by information explosion. Life-long learning is becoming a must, because anyone who wants to keep up with the times needs to keep on learning. Therefore, the ability of self-learning and critical thinking enables the students to develop themselves continuously long after graduation. What’s more, in modern society, team-work mentality and communication skills are also of great significance which universities should put more emphasis while educating the students.

To sum up, universities should not only serve as institutes disseminating knowledge, but also help the students to foster merits which will support them to succeed in the severe competition.
