The human race has undoubtedly left its mark on the world. Despite a growing awareness of the impact we are
having on the environment around us, this realisation is coming too late for some of the creatures which share
this planet.
One of the main reasons that wildlife is under threat is loss of habitat. As the world’s population continues to
grow at an alarming rate, more and more land is cleared for agricultural use. Global warming is also making it
more difficult for animals such as polar bears to find food. Typically, these creatures hunt for seals on the sea
ice, but as the temperature of the Earth rises, many polar bears are starving to death.
In addition, oil spills have had a devastating impact on our oceans. Pristine environments such as the Great
Barrier Reef in Australia have fallen victim to companies breaching the law and entering restricted areas.
Many governments around the world have already taken steps to try to protect our wildlife from further
damage. Laws have been introduced which are designed to limit the destruction of the animals’ habitat and
reduce the carbon emissions which lead to global warming. However, in order for these regulations to have a
greater impact, they need to be tightened and more strictly enforced.
In my opinion, offering incentives for adopting a more environmentally friendly approach is likely to be more
effective than increasing the penalties for those who break the law. Eco-tourism has a lot of potential. On the
coast of Mexico, local people who used to take turtles’ eggs for food have now set up a foundation which aims
to protect the turtles. Tourists pay to visit the centre and also have the chance to release baby turtles into the
ocean for a small fee.

 Task One
The table outlines the number of cars made in three countries (Argentina, Australia, and Thailand) from 2003 to
2009.
It is evident from the table that Thailand produced by far the largest number of cars over the six-year period, with
a total of almost 3 million. Meanwhile, Australia produced the smallest number of vehicles, having a total of just
under 1 million. Argentina came in a close second with a total of approximately 1.1 million cars produced.
Argentina had the lowest production total in 2003, but almost tripled its amount by 2006, and continued to grow
to over 512 thousand by 2009. Thailand began with the highest production total in 2003 of around 742 thousand,
and similarly saw a sharp increase by 2006. However, Thailand’s production numbers slipped to under 1 million
by 2009, nevertheless maintaining its position as the producer of the most cars out of the three countries.
Australia is the only country that experienced a steady decrease in production over this period. Starting at 413
thousand, Australia’s numbers decreased by approximately 100 thousand every 3 years, finishing with a total of
around 227 thousand in 2009

In many countries, the proportion of older people is steadily increasing. Does this trend make positive or negative effects to the society?

It is inevitable that the aging has been a strong trend in many parts of the world for many years. Part of reasons would be the rapid development of some industries like healthcare, medicines or even insurance and etc… and the others might include government policies, culture changes, and social moral shifts. Some countries, especially the developed ones, has stepped into the aging society which has a fairly large proportion of older people in the overall population structure, while more developing countries are moving to this direction at different paces. As a result of which, the debate on the impacts of aging population to a society, in general, never ends.

A certain proportion of social study expertise insists that aging has more positive effects than negative, to a society. They claims that more older people help to form a more mature, steady social environments, as they believe, supported from previous population studies, that older people have more respects to the public communities, and are much less aggressive when conflicts arise. Secondly, this trend can significantly stimulate the development of some relevant industries like healthcare and medicines, and perfect the government pension system and commercial insurance system, as the demand on those products increases in line with the aging trend.

While there are also many other professionals criticizing the positive effects from aging to a society might be over-estimated and the negative impacts could be substantial. This is particularly true to some developing countries, where sound pension and healthcare insurance systems have not been established. As aging adds much more pressures on these systems than societies which are dominated by young people. Secondly, large proportion of older people means relatively small proportion of young and mid-aged people, who are the primary contributors to the industry and overall economy. Thus lacking of working force is always a key issue for aging society. Last but not least, within a family unit, mid-generations have much more pressures financially and emotionally, from the older and younger generations in the family, which is particularly true in some countries where one child policy are deployed, like China.

The debate never ends and there is no universally dominating opinion over the other. I believe that the population proportion and the economy status should be somewhat balanced, in order to maximize the benefits and minimize the shortages from society becoming aging. More specific, when a society is inevitably becoming an aging one, we need to ensure the related industries and policies are in place to support the transition.
