The human race has undoubtedly left its mark on the world. Despite a growing awareness of the impact we are
having on the environment around us, this realisation is coming too late for some of the creatures which share
this planet.
One of the main reasons that wildlife is under threat is loss of habitat. As the world’s population continues to
grow at an alarming rate, more and more land is cleared for agricultural use. Global warming is also making it
more difficult for animals such as polar bears to find food. Typically, these creatures hunt for seals on the sea
ice, but as the temperature of the Earth rises, many polar bears are starving to death.
In addition, oil spills have had a devastating impact on our oceans. Pristine environments such as the Great
Barrier Reef in Australia have fallen victim to companies breaching the law and entering restricted areas.
Many governments around the world have already taken steps to try to protect our wildlife from further
damage. Laws have been introduced which are designed to limit the destruction of the animals’ habitat and
reduce the carbon emissions which lead to global warming. However, in order for these regulations to have a
greater impact, they need to be tightened and more strictly enforced.
In my opinion, offering incentives for adopting a more environmentally friendly approach is likely to be more
effective than increasing the penalties for those who break the law. Eco-tourism has a lot of potential. On the
coast of Mexico, local people who used to take turtles’ eggs for food have now set up a foundation which aims
to protect the turtles. Tourists pay to visit the centre and also have the chance to release baby turtles into the
ocean for a small fee.

The table provides information about how many cars were manufactured in Argentina, Australia and Thailand
between 2003 and 2009.
Just 161,176 cars were produced in Argentina in 2003 but this rose considerably to 432,120 in 2006. The
numbers continued to rise but growth slowed down in 2009 when 512,924 vehicles were made.
The trend in Australia was quite different. 413,261 cars were made in 2003 but the industry declined during the
following six years. 330,906 cars were manufactured in 2006 and this number fell to 227,283 in 2009.
Thailand produced more cars than the other two countries put together. In 2003, 742,062 were made and in
2006 this increased to a staggering 1,194,426. There was a small decline following this because 999,378 cars
were made in 2009.
Overall, the data for the three countries was quite different. The car industry kept rising in Argentina but
steadily declined in Australia. On the other hand, there was a spike in the number of cars made in Thailand in
2006, but then it declined a little in 2009. Many more cars were made in Thailand than in the other two
countries.

Nowadays, with living standards becoming higher and higher, more people are able to afford household appliances such as TV, microwave, oven and rice cooker. In my opinion, that is a positive phenomenon which stands for a more efficient and convenient life.

Some people think humans can exploit animals for any purpose that they need while others disagree. Discuss both views and give your own opinion?

When it comes to the relationship between animals and human beings, quite a few people declare that human beings are entitled to exploit animals for whatever purpose they want, while others consider it otherwise. Personally, I side with the latter.

Advocates for freely exploring animals claim that, just like wolves to sheep, humans are on the superior to all animals. In their opinion, they should be allowed to take any advantage from any animal, including feeding on dogs’ meat, manufacturing clothes out of foxes’ fur and conducting medical experiments on alive mice. However, there is no such thing as superiority in nature. Each animal species, be it little frog in a farming field or massive tiger in a remote mountain, plays an irreplaceable part in its food chain and helps to maintain the balance of the nature.Without animals, the ecological system would be destroyed and human beings would not be able to survive in the future.

Exploiting animals at will should not be permitted, and the two main reasons are as follows. First of all, some exploiting behaviors from human beings completely ignores the pain or even the death of animals.  In the case of extracting gall from alive bears, the bears feel extremely intensive pain, lying hopelessly in the cage, with blood flowing out from the bitter wounds on the chest and tears welling out off its innocent eyes. No civilized person would approve such brutal cases.  Second of all,  most of human’s activities of exploiting animals are not necessary. For example, the clothes of artificial furs, mostly made from fiber, provide equal warming and dressing effect with those of furs which human beings tripped mercilessly off alive foxes and rabbits. Besides, there have already been plenty of vegetarians worldwide, relying on bean products to satisfy their protein needs and living healthily, which means human beings can do without the meat from animals.

In conclusion, human beings should not exploit animals at will as some of human activities involving animals are too brutal to be approved and there are plenty of substitutes for the so-called necessary activities.
