Task 2

Money for postgraduate research is limited. Therefore some people think financial support from governments should be only provided for scientific research rather than research for less useful subjects. Do you agree or disagree?

Science has always been a major contributor to the advancement of human society and improvement of living standard, while the resources available for scientific research are always scarce. Therefore, some people assert that governments should assign their financial support to scientific research exclusively. From my perspective, scientific research should be given highest priority while governmental pecuniary assistance is concerned, but other subjects also have their redeeming features and should not be neglected completely.

It is true that the scarcity in fund is a key impediment for many scientific researches, and given sufficient money, scientists are able to attain more breakthroughs on many intractable problems. Take pharmaceutical research for example. The research and development of a new drug usually takes millions of dollars and a period as long as years even decades, while over the duration, no profit is made from the research. For any postgraduate institution, not only the astronomical sum of money is overwhelmingly prohibitive, but also the human and material resources occupied are beyond their affordability. Thence, government should support those researches that are coping with the toughest problems, otherwise few scientists would like to devote their time and energy to these subjects, and as a result, no progress would ever be made in those fields. What is more, sufficient fund for scientific research is also an advantage that is appealing to the worlds’ most talented scientists. The 21st century is regarded as a new millennium in which the competition among countries is actually the rivalry of the talents. The countries attracting the most preeminent people are able to play the leading roles in every arena of the world. Therefore, it is not groundless to put so much emphasis on scientific research.

However, we should also not deny the benefits brought about by other subjects which are impacting our lives on every aspect. Researches into anthropology help us to better understand the evolution of mankind and our society, while research on environmental protection enables us to develop in a sustainable way. These subjects should not be excluded entirely from the governmental support.

To conclude, abundant money invested in scientific researches guarantees the development on the toughest problems and attracts top talents worldwide. It is recommended that governments give high priority while allocating its supporting fund, while other “seemingly” less useful subjects should also be taken into consideration.
