Some countries achieve international success by building specialized sports facilities for top athletes to train instead of providing sports facilities that everyone can use. Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

As is known to all, access to and participation in sport is a human right and essential for individuals of all ages to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. Interestingly, however, in order to achieve international success in various sports competitions, some countries choose to build specialized sports facilities to cater more specifically to their top athletes' needs instead of providing sports facilities that everyone can use. From my perspective, it is definitely a negative development.

Obviously, there are many reasons for countries to take such action as to build specialized sports facilities for top athletes to train rather than for general use. Apart from the delight and dignity that numerous medals can bring to a country, winning the sports match is also a significant economic force providing employment and contributing to a country’s development, thus it seems justifiable for government to sacrifice common people’s benefits of taking part in sports activities to prioritize and maximize top athletes’ needs.

However, there is more than just organized competitive sports match that is of great importance, general physical activity also has an important role in all societies. Sport teaches people core values such as co-operation and respect. It improves health and reduces the likelihood of disease. And, more importantly, it brings individuals and communities together, bridging cultural or ethnic divides. If governments stop maintaining and upgrading the sports equipment for public use, it might even leads to turbulence within the society, since it would be quite ridiculous and unbelievable that taxpayers pay so much tax but cannot find the right facilities in the right places.

In conclusion, countries should invest government funding in facilities, venues and training programs to make it easier for more people to play sport and develop their talent. In this way, National Sports Committees might identify and nurture more talents to represent their country and win more medals in the Olympic Games in the future.
