Some people think all lawbreakers should be put into prison. Others believe that there are better alternatives. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

As the world witnesses an increasing number of crimes every year, people seem to become a lot less tolerable towards lawbreakers. Some even suggests that all of them should be put into prison. Personally, I can understand why people make such behest, even though their request has clearly gone too extreme. Nowadays, the public is bombarded with horrible news like random shooting on campus and drunk driver hit and run, naturally people feel scared and worried.  To lessen their insecurity, they believe that it is necessary to take harsh and strict measures, i.e. putting every lawbreaker behind bars.  [KZ1] Even though their cause is reasonable, I do not find it adequate or practical to implement such proposal.

It is believed that secondary school children should study international news as one of their school subjects. Others think that this is a waste of valuable school time. Discuss both views and give your opinions.

Whether it is necessary to insert international news analysis session into our current secondary school curriculum, people tends to hold different view to the necessities for secondary students to study international events, though it seems a time-consuming task with no guaranteed improvement for their impending SAT test result. Some even argue since most of the high school students are living on a tight schedule for science and literature mainly, time as a valuable asset should never be allocate to the out of curriculum international event studies. I tend to disagree for the above point, for that it is not only necessary for high school students to study international event, but I highly recommend that international study should be added into our current curriculum as an independent subject along with other science related ones.

The above two charts summarise the reasons why people left the UK and stayed in the UK during the past few years.

Interestingly, the main reasons people choose to depart from the UK and live in the UK are the same, being joining their family and friends. The percentage reaches 39% and 34% respectively. This result is not so surprising considering the important role family and friends play in our society.

In many countries, the proportion of older people is steadily increasing. Does this trend have more positive or negative effects on the society?

Coupled with the rapid development in medical science and life quality, people are able to live longer, and the proportion of old people are rising at a steady pace. However, whether it has more positive or negative impacts is certainly a contentious one.

Granted, with the increase of senior citizens, the younger generation acquire more opportunities to spend time with their senior relatives. They could enjoy a large family gathering, sharing their happiness, sadness and problems  with the their great grandparents, during which time they might occasionally acquire several pieces of valuable advice. The rich experiences of the senior members could possibly inspire the junior ones to develop a different way to  cope with grumpy superiors in workplace, for example,writing a long and heart-touching email to an angry boss rather than confronting with him directly.

However, beneath the seemingly advantageous surface, tremendous negative impacts are troubling and even possibly haunting both individual families and the whole society.  Chief among the problems is the huge financial burden imposed on the younger parents who have to support four or even more orderly members along with their children. They have to pay the utility bills, buy daily necessities,  pay for the intimidating medical expense, or even hire nurses to help them to take care of their senior members, the expense of which could sometimes exceed their yearly income. Another negative influences of rising ratio of old people is that the development of society are slowing down. In particular, the lack of vigorous work force (beyond doubt, most of the elderly are weak in physical strength and not able to engage in labor demanding jobs) are hindering the development of social economy and industry. For example, in China, though it has the largest population in the world, there is a serious shortage of labor-intensive workers in most of areas including construction sites and factories, hindering the further advancement of country.

By way of conclusion, the problems involved in the continuously climbing proportion of aged people far outweigh its benefits, considering the undue financial pressure on families  and the slower development of society.

Some groups, such as poor people and people from rural areas, think universities should make it especially easy for them to get access to university education. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

When it comes to the disadvantaged groups in the society, people always believe that they should be given special concern in various fields including higher education. As far as I am concerned, the disprivilagd students, such as those who live in poverty, should be cared for, but not given privileges in terms of entry to universities.

Some people, with a compassionate attitude toward students from poor families and rural areas, attempt to justify the educational privilege offered by universities to them, reasoning that it will help to compensate for the deficiency of their previous education. It is beyond dispute that educational diaparities do exist in different social groups. To illustrate, the less developed regions may not have been provided with sufficient facilities for education, i.e. schools and classrooms, and high tuition fees have denied poor students’ access to some renowned learning institutes. However, both those problems should be fixed by the government in the primary and secondary phases of their education. It is simply not reasonable to leave this responsibility to universities, which, as is known to all, are the place for scientific research and higher education.

Further, there would be problems if certain social groups were granted with exceptional advantages in college education. For one thing, it is a violation of the priciple of fair competition; for another, students admitted to a university without adequate knowledge and skills will be likely to feel inferior to the other students, which will consequently result in some psychological problems.

To draw a conclusion, sympathy to the less privileged groups is understandable, but the proper approach to solve their educational problems is to invest more in the teaching and learning facilities available to them, so as to equip them with equal eligibility for being admitted to universities.
